Previewing Space Tech Expo USA & CyberLEO
By John Oncea, Editor
A few industry events are coming to California during the first half of May: Space Tech Expo USA May 2 – 4 in Long Beach and CyberLEO May May 11 – 12 in Los Angeles. Let’s take a look at what attendees should expect, starting with the 11th edition of Space Tech Expo which will be held at the Long Beach Convention Centre.
Scaling Up To Strengthen The Space Backbone
Space Tech Expo dubs itself as North America’s premier exhibition and conference that can serve as a “one-stop-shop to discover the brilliance that the space industry has to offer.” This year’s conference theme is Scaling Up to Strengthen the Space Backbone. It offers two days of face-to-face collaboration and the opportunity to explore new technologies, meet new business partners, and learn from the industry’s most in-demand thought leaders.
More than 3,300 visitors are expected to attend, learning from over 40 speakers and interacting with no less than 250 exhibitors, from startups to the industry’s biggest players. The event’s technical-level speakers come from across the supply chain and will provide a unique opportunity for attendees to examine key issues and opportunities within the U.S.-domestic and international space industry, with a diverse variety of both industry and technological high-impact sessions. Spanning both days, topics to be covered include:
- Workforce development
- Optimized system design through additive manufacturing
- Material development
- Next-gen robotics for missions to LEO, lunar, and beyond
Speakers include Col. Joseph J. Roth, Director, Innovation & Prototyping, Space Systems Command, United States Space Force; Tin Ghataore, President, Mynaric USA and CCO, Mynaric; Franck Mouriaux, Principal Spacecraft Systems Engineer, Rocket Lab; Justin Luczyk, Director of Spacecraft Equipment, Airbus U.S. Space & Defense; Carol Craig, Founder & CEO, Sidus Space; and Dr. Onur Deniz, Co-founder & CEO, Neuralagent.
Day one presenters will focus on scaling up terrestrial capabilities, while those speaking on day two will be looking at developing in-space applications. Attending any of these more than 40 presentations will provide a better understanding of which technologies will allow us to speed up the manufacturing process and reduce time to market while keeping you abreast of the latest industry developments in funding, the future of the workforce, and the supply chain.
The LEO Revolution
Nine days later and about 25 miles to the north CyberLEO, the only cybersecurity event dedicated to LEO and emerging technologies, will be taking place at the Hyatt Regency Los Angeles International Airport, providing attendees the opportunity to hear from high-level leaders in satellite, space, cybersecurity, and government for discussions and in-depth insight into the latest cyber threats.
CyberLEO’s mission is to bring you discussions, updates, briefings, and lessons learned from real-world experiences that will positively impact your cybersecurity strategy. To accomplish that, they work closely with their Advisory Board to build a program that you can feel confident in.
To that end, they have noted that thousands of small satellites are being launched yearly, and several LEO constellations are coming online in 2023. New technology, rapid launches, hundreds of thousands of entry points – LEO creates the opportunity for emerging technologies and innovation but also creates a playground for bad actors to take advantage of these constellations. How will we secure the path to LEO?
That’s a question CyberLEO’s more than 30 speakers look to answer, including the aforementioned Tina Ghataore; Iranga Kahangama, Assistant Secretary for Cyber, Infrastructure, Risk, and Resilience, U.S. Department of Homeland Security; Dr. Greg Kuperman, Program Manager, Strategic Technology Office, DARPA; Craig Miller, President, Government Systems, Viasat, Inc.; Carmel Ortiz, Vice President, Systems Innovation, Intelsat; Christopher Scott, Managing Partner, Unit 42, Palto Alto Networks; Lt. Colonel Tim Trimailo, Program Manager, Space Development Agency (SDA) Tracking Cell, U.S. Space Force; and Greg Wyler, Founder, Chairman & CEO, E-Space.*
These speakers aim to deliver discussions, updates, briefings, and lessons learned stemming from real-world experiences that will make an immediate impact on your cybersecurity strategy, as well as bring together industry and government leaders to discuss open-source software vulnerabilities, network segmentation, ransomware, end-to-end product security, data provenance and more.
* Maybe you can ask Tina for a ride from Long Beach to LA.**
** Please don’t do this.
See You There?
There you got it – two great conferences featuring hundreds of exhibitors, dozens of presenters, and hours of networking time. Plus, beautiful Southern California – it’s a combination that’s tough to beat.
