High Gain Phototransistor Optocouplers For Space Applications

One of the first optocouplers used for high reliability applications was the simple phototransistor optocoupler. The basic devices were the 4N22, 23, 24 and the 4N47, 48, 49 series of hermetic phototransistor optocouplers in TO‐five type transistor cans made for military applications developed in the early 1970s. The wide bandwidth requirement in DBS satellite applications places a big performance demand on the individual components in the low-noise block downconverter. This article describes a low-cost, wide bandwidth passive mixer for 10.7 to 12.8 GHz DBS applications with low LO drive requirements. The mixer uses a dual mixer diode in the SOT-23 package.
